Exceptional costs at National Express Group plc in 2010 included a post-tax charge of ￡11·3m at UK Rail. Having reached agreement with DfT 'for both sides to withdraw all claims relating to the hand-back of the East Coast rail franchise', NEG had taken a pretax charge of ￡18·3m to write off balances 'previously treated as recoverable' in relation to East Coast, less tax relief of ￡7m on rail exit costs.
