Loughor viaduct to be replaced

Network Rail has received planning consent from Carmarthenshire Council to replace the Grade ll-listed Loughor viaduct with a new structure. This clears the way for a £40m project will see a 6 mile single-track bottleneck in the main line between Swansea and Llanelli restored to double track, allowing more trains to be scheduled and improving reliability (RB1405 p2). The 215 m long viaduct was built for double track, but its current condition is such that it could not safely support two tracks once again. Hence a new double-track structure is to be constructed alongside at a cost of £16m which NR will fund.
