Class 66 efficiency boost

Fitting Class 66 locomotives with a £100 000 package of fuel efficiency modifications could reduce annual fuel costs across the 450-strong UK fleet by £53m, according to Ricardb. Central to this saving is a reduction in engine idling which is responsible for up to 41% of fuel burned in the freight duty cycle. Fuel consumption of the Class 66's two-stroke EMD 12N-710G3B-EC engine is particularly poor when idling.
