Work starts on Ely loops

As part of the upgrade that has already delivered the W10 loading gauge last year, capacity on the major freight route from Felixstowe to the VVCML at Nuneaton is being increased to accommodate more and longer trains. Network Kail announced on February 29 that work was beginning on the creation of a pair of refuge loops along the east side of Ely station to accommodate 775 m long trains, due to be commissioned in summer 2013.At the south end they will be laid out to accommodate subsequent doubling of the 4.5 miles of single track between Soham and Ely.
