Ever since the 1-6 mile branch from Watford High Street to Croxley Green closed 'temporarily' on March 25 1996, its reuse has been proposed to take London Underground Metropolitan Line services to Watford Junction by constructing a 400 m viaduct across the A412 and the Grand Union Canal. LU's existing Watford terminus, some distance from the town centre, would be closed and the site released for development. As early as January 9 1997, our predecessor Rail Privatisation News reported that Watford Council, Three Rivers District and Hertfordshire County Council had been awarded grants worth £6-2m, and given permission to borrow a further £4-3m for a series of projects related to the Croxley Link.
