DfT is consulting until February 28 2014 on a proposal from Network Rail to close the Folkestone Harbour branch and Folkestone Harbour station 'at the earliest opportunity'. 1MR says that a recent assessment 'taking all aspects into consideration' had concluded that 'it would not be financially appropriate or responsible' to continue to maintain the steeply-graded line between Folkestone East Jn and Folkestone Harbour. Made largely redundant by the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994, the 1 mile branch saw its last timetabled passenger service in 2001. Charter services operated by Venice Simplon Orient Express moved to Folkestone West in March 2009, after which the Folkestone Harbour branch was closed under the procedures for short-term network change while NR assessed 'future transport requirements and operating costs'.
