New DMU builds unlikely

An important conclusion of the Long-Term Passenger Rolling Stock Strategy for the Rail Industry, published by ATOC, NR and the ROSCOs on February 12 (p1), is that further builds of diesel multiple-units are unlikely. ROSCO insiders have been saying this for some time. Apart from residual value concerns, current and future EU emissions legislation will make it increasingly difficult 'or even impossible' to make a viable business case for DMUs powered by underfloor engines. Tighter regulations are currently out to consultation.
