TfL consults on Trams 2030 plan

Transport for London has published details of its Trams 2030 strategy for development of the Tramlink light rail network centred on Croydon. The focus of the 15-year plan is on providing capacity to meet growing demand, supporting regeneration including the Westfield-Hammerson shopping development, and tackling current reliability issues. Tramlink ridership has grown from fewer than 20 million passenger-journeys in the early 2000s to 31 million in 2013-14. Traffic is predicted to reach 60 million passenger-journeys by 2031, with the Westfield retail development alone generating 2 million extra trips/year. Work to increase capacity on the Wimbledon branch is underway, but 66% more capacity will be needed on this line in the longer term.
