The University of Huddersfield's new Centre for Innovation in Rail, part of the Institute of Railway Research, has won its first contract for the HS2 project. Led by Dr Paul Allen and Dr Adam Bevan, the research programme will involve mathematical modelling and dynamic simulation of vehicle and track systems for a number of high-speed train concepts. According to Dr Bevan, Head of Enterprise at 1RR, the work will provide HS2 Ltd with 'vital information on system performance and help guide the ongoing design and procurement process for both the vehicle and track'. Simulation work will investigate aspects of system performance, such as ride quality, the forces generated between the vehicle and the track and the likely wheel-rail deterioration mechanisms and rates which might be expected during operation of the new high-speed network.
