GN/GE upgrade reaches Phase 5

Transport Minister Baroness Kramer visited Lincolnshire on September 11 to view progress with the £280m project to upgrade the Great Northern/Great Eastern Joint Line between Doncaster and Peterborough. As well as inspecting the recently reopened Sleaford avoiding line, she officially opened a new pedestrian underpass at Heighington between Lincoln and Sleaford. 'This vital project will enable more trains to run, helping to meet growing demand for rail services', said Network Rail Area Director Justin Page. 'It will also act as an important diversionary route for the East Coast Main Line at times of disruption or engineering work'. The latest phase of the GN/ GE project had been completed on September 1 (RB1468 p1), following work to replace three underbridges between Doncaster and Gainsborough, lower the track beneath two overbridges and repair the bridge carrying the Joint Line over the ECML south of Doncaster. 'Simultaneously, the first stage of the increase in line speed was implemented', reports NR, allowing trains to travel at 65 mile/h between Pyewipe Junction in Lincoln and Trent East Junction at Gainsborough.
