DfT seeks Pacer replacement

In the prospectus for the replacement Northern franchise (pi), DfT notes the 'considerable dissatisfaction' of passengers with the current rolling stock fleet. The autumn 2013 National Rail Passenger Survey (RB1455 p4) gave Northern a satisfaction rating of 72% for rolling stock, 13% below the average for comparable Regional TOCs. As a result, DfT will be seeking a franchisee 'who can enhance the passenger experience through the provision and deployment of suitable rolling stock'. It notes that almost one-third of the Northern fleet is made up of Pacer DMUs.
