Hitachi Rail Europe announced on May 7 that it had signed a contract with Lucchini UK covering the supply of 3 500 wheelsets for Phase 1 of the Intercity Express Programme (RB1461 p5). Contracts covering Phase 2 are expected to be finalised this summer. Designed at Hitachi's Kasado factory in Japan in collaboration with the main Lucchini plant at Lovere in Italy, the wheelsets are to be produced at the Lucchini UK facility at Trafford Park in Manchester. The wheelsets will then be sent to Hitachi to be fitted to the bogies that the Japanese manufacturer is producing for the Class 800 and Class 801 trainsets.
