Costain wins Crossrail GEML upgrade

Network Rail has awarded Costain a £150m contract to upgrade the Great Eastern Main Line between Stratford and Shenfield for Cross-rail services. Main works under the Crossrail North East Spur contract, announced on March 10, are scheduled to take place between late 2014 and 2017. The contract involves 'a significant programme of track renewals', as well as an OHLE upgrade. Additional stabling and turnback facilities are to be provided for the new Crossrail EMU fleet (RB1456 p1). In addition, Costain is to design and execute a programme of station improvements including platform extensions and the provision of step-free access. Major schemes are planned at Romford and Ilford, and other works at Forest Gate, Goodmayes, Harold Wood, Gidea Park, Chadwell Heath and Brentwood.
