The South West Trains/Network Rail Alliance is due to start work in May on a £5-2m refurbishment programme at Twickenham station, due for completion before the start of the Rugby World Cup in May 2015. Including the provision of step-free access between ticket office and platforms, accessible toilets and a new footbridge, the project is being funded by the alliance, DfT's National Stations Improvement Programme and the Greater London Authority, the latter providing a £1-6m contribution via Richmond Council. Telent Technology Services Ltd has been awarded a five-year extension to its contract to maintain the optic fibre and voice telecoms network operated for Network Rail and other industry users by Level 3, formerly Global Crossing UK Ltd. The contract now running until March 2019 covers 14 000 km of optic fibre and 40 000 telephony end points.
