Level crossing and platform accidents head 2013 fatalities

Publishing on January 31 its high-level overview of safety performance on the national network in 2013, RSSB reported that the total number of fatalities recorded last year was 19, up from 11 in 2012. Of these 19 fatalities, 10 were members of the public killed at level crossings, six being pedestrians and four the occupants of vehicles struck by trains. For the sixth year in succession there were no passenger or workforce fatalities caused by train accidents in 2013, but there were six passenger fatalities at stations, mainly due to falls from the platform edge or down stairs. RSSB says that 2013 was more consistent with the longer-term average, 2012 being 'exceptional in that it was the first calendar year where no passenger fatalities were recorded'.
