Osborne backs 140 mile/h ECML

Visiting Stockton-on-Tees as the ITTs for the replacement Northern and TransPennine Express franchises were published on February 27, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said that he had asked DfT and Network Rail to begin talks to develop a business case for the infrastructure improvements 'to make 140 mile/h running on the East Coast a reality'. His support followed a presentation made by NR to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin in October 2014.
