RMT confirmed on April 28 that it had begun preparations to ballot station staff at Govia Thameslink Railway over plans to close ticket offices or reduce their opening hours at 84 stations on the Great Northern, Southern and Thames-link networks. According to the union, the proposals represent 'a direct threat to services, jobs and staff safety.' RMT says that during discussions with GTR, union representatives had discovered that 'a major element' had been omitted from the main consultation document, namely the removal of ticket machines from ticket offices to station concourses. Having considered that matter, RMT's National Executive Committee has moved to a ballot.
