NR electrification contractor Carillion Powerlines is inviting bids to supply 8 500 steel tubular piles to provide foundations for OHLE masts. Valued at around £8m and running for six years, the framework contract would cover the remaining phases of NR's Northwest Electrification Programme, as well as Holytown - Shotts - Midcalder Junction in Scotland and the Midland Main Line. Following electrical interference testing on April 23 (RBI504 p4), Centro expects the Midland Metro extension to New Street station in Birmingham to open on May 22. Prior to the start of on-street training, drivers have been learning the new route on a simulator at Wednesbury depot.
