Freight site buy-back cost £220m

In a written answer given to the House of Commons last month, Transport Minister Claire Perry revealed that the cost to Network Rail of acquiring 105 freight sites from DB Schenker, Freightliner and GB Railfreight under Project Mountfield was £220m. The deals were completed in 2014 (RB1474 p3). According to NR, the aim of the acquisition was to help make better use of the network, provide improved access to freight operators and add capacity at critical points on the East Coast and West Coast main lines.
