In preparation for laying a third track on the West Anglia Main Line between Stratford and Angel Road, during a 49 h possession over the weekend of November 4 to 5 Network Rail and its contractor Volker-Fitzpatrick removed a 125 tonne bridge span that had formerly carried the railway over the River Lea Navigation. A replacement bridge is to be installed early next year to accommodate the new third track, with a total length of 5•5 km, that will enable two additional trains/h to operate in the peaks between Stratford and Angel Road. The upgrade is being undertaken under the £170m Lea Valley Rail Programme, due for completion in 2019 and funded by the government, the Mayor of London, the London Economic Action Partnership and TfL, as well as Enfield and Haringey councils.
