ASLEF takes long-term view

ASLEF members at Southern began a 48 h strike on January 10 in the long-running dispute over the extension of driver-only operation. Further strikes were planned for January 13, 24-25 and 27, a change from the six days of continuous industrial action planned from January 9 to 14. 'We are taking a longer-term view of this trade dispute', said ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan. 'We remain committed to a negotiated settlement, as was reached with ScotRail, but it is difficult to negotiate with people who are not prepared to be flexible', he added.
