Initial investigations of monitored natural attenuation (MNA) at INL TAN suggested that aerobic cometabolism was naturally occurring. However, the existing body of scientific literature, as well as published MNA protocols, dismissed this mechanism as being unimportant under intrinsic conditions. Despite this, a group at INL rigorously tested it until they collected sufficient evidence to convince both the technical and regulatory members of the project team that intrinsic aerobic cometabolism of TCE was occurring at TAN. Ultimately, demonstration of this mechanism was the most important component of obtaining regulatory approval of the MNA remedy.
