WIPP Celebrates 10 Years of Safe Operations

Queuing up for the lunch line at the March 26,2009, anniver- sary celebration, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant employees remarked, "I'd rather eat steak than cake!" Instead of a tradi- tional birthday cake topped with some WIPP-related icon of sugary frosting, WIPP em- ployees opted for a 16-ounce barbequed cowboy steak, with regional side dishes of hearty pinto beans, tangy coleslaw, and cobbler. Two lunchtime events and employee recognition ceremonies, outdoors at the WIPP site and in the visitor lobby at WIPP offices in Carlsbad, N.M., marked the 10th anniversary of the first shipment of transuran-ic (TRU) waste to WIPP.
