One of the key issues for stakeholders considering the implementation of a geological disposal facility for radioactive waste is the ease of waste retrieval from a repository. More generally, for several years the issue of reversibility and retrievability (R&R) of a geologic repository has been discussed at the international level in relation to stepwise decision-making (see Refs. 1-7). This issue comes from political and social demand and is, in many cases, codified in laws and government requirements.
