PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make radioactive waste capable of geological disposal after storing the radioactive waste for cooling until decay heat is removed. ;SOLUTION: The facility is provided with a sealed vessel storage room 1 formed inside an underground bedrock 3 so as to store a plurality of radioactive waste sealed vessels 4 in which cooling water can be stored and radioactive waste is sealed, a sealed vessel conveying shaft 10 extending from the ground surface 2 to the sealed vessel storage room 1, a circulation pump 20 to circulate the cooling water 5 stored in the sealed vessel storage room 1 and pipes 21, 23, 24 and 25, and a heat exchanger 19 provided in between the pipes 23 and 24 to cool the cooling water 5. After the decay heat in the radioactive waste is removed, the cooling water in the sealed vessel storage room 1 is drained and filler of bentonite-based material is filled inside the sealed vessel storage room 1 and the sealed vessel conveying shaft 10 to perform the geological disposal of the radioactive waste.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
