Scanners Abroad, Squelch Hysteresis, Monitoring GSM and Lots of Frequencies

Over the last few years, I've visited Singapore several times for the annual CommunicAsia communications exhibition. Many of you will know that Singapore is often called a fine city because you can end up with a huge fine for chewing gum, another huge fine for riding a bike in a subway and so on. They also have much more serious punishments for slightly more serious crimes.rnWhenever I've visited there, I've taken a handheld scanner with me because I've been helping out at the show and I've used it to demonstrate reception of various two-way radio systems. It now turns out that I should have known better because after a bit of research following a query from a reader about which countries a scanner can be taken to, I've found out that scanners are completely illegal in Singapore and I could have been thrown in jail if I had been caught just having it in my possession let alone using it!
