Remembering Gianni Tofani: Preparing Radio Technologies for Large Radio-Astronomy Projects

In this short contribution to commemorate GiannirnTofani’s (Figure 1) insightful roles for progressing radiorntechnologies for radio astronomy, I wish to mention onlyrna few occasions that illustrate this.rnIn the seventies and early eighties, we mostlyrnmet on the occasions to push VLBI (very-long-baselinerninterferometry) techniques in Europe, e.g., throughrnmembership in the Receiver Working Group. At the time,rnthis group was very active in “harmonizing” the disparaternreceiving systems around Europe, for example, with respectrnto frequency bands, polarization, frequency-conversionrnschemes, time-dissemination and phase-coherent aspects,rnRF systems, and, ultimately, digitization and recordingrntechniques, in particular in collaboration with Haystack/rnMIT and the NRAO.
