Sunburn cells, having many characteristics of apoptotic cells, appear in human skin after exposure to UVB. Time- courses and dose responses for solar simulated radiation (SSR)-induced sunburn cells in human volunteers of skin type II have been determined. For the time-course, two groups of volunteers were exposed to two minimal erythema doses (MED) of SSR. Punch biopsies were obtained from Group 1 immediately, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 h after SSR exposure and Group 2 were biopsied Immediately, 18, 24, 36, 48 and 72 h after exposure.
