There are times when it appears that the era of amateur radio experimentation in fields other than 'digital', based on commercially-available chips, is retreating into past (happy) days. But then comes evidence that experimentation in circuitry and antennas still survives, if less evident than in some past decades. Clearly, John Lien, LA6PB, still enjoys experimentation and in finding solutions to long-standing problems: He writes: "As experimenting radio amateurs, we often cause a short-circuit and are thankful that the system is protected by a fuse. But then the question arises, Do we have a replacement fuse at hand and is it easy to fit?'. Often the answer to one or other or both of these questions is 'No'.
