Rainer Bertelsmeier, DJ9BV, passed away on 22 May following a long period of ill health. He is probably best remembered for his VHF and UHF antenna designs and there are many operators who have built 'BV antennas. He was a regular contributor to DUBUS Magazine, initially as the editor of the Technical Reports section and, later, as Editor in Chief. It is thanks to Rainer and other analysts and designers like Gunther Hoch, DL6WU, in Europe and Stephen Powlishen, Kl FO, in the USA to name but two, that we now know how to extract the last fraction of dB gain from a given boom length of a Yagi and of how to stack and bay arrays of Yagis for optimum performance. R.I.P Rainer, we will miss you.rnOn 24 June, Ray Cracknell, G2AHU, passed away. Martin Harrison, G3USF, Chairman of the RSGB Propagation Studies Committee, wrote, "Among other aspects of his -60 years as a licensed amateur, he was a central figure in the discovery and exploration of TEP and was at the African end (as ZE2JV in what was then Southern Rhodesia) of the tests that demonstrated TEP at VHF/UHF by working SV1DH on both 144 and 430MHz. This was a substantial, enduring contribution that received due professional recognition as well as from fellow amateurs."
