The Dornier Do.217 was a very much-refined larger version of the Do.17 'Flying Pencil' heavy bomber, which was used in 1940 during the Battle of Britain. Construction began on this updated later version in 1940 and the Do.217 entered service in 1941 and was soon to be available in significant numbers. The '217 had a much larger bomb capacity and a far greater range, It served on all fronts due to it being designated as a heavy bomber rather than a medium bomber, and was adapted for many uses including a strategic bomber, torpedo bomber, and reconnaissance aircraft; it also saw action as a night-fighter right up to the end of WWII.
