MAKE MINE AN AUSTER!

Last month the Auster J1 build reached the final stages of the fuselage. So to continue we must tackle the wings. An early decision is required here for the plan shows the original single servo for the ailerons. I opted to put one in each wing panel, so that meant mounts and hatches were needed. I had a couple of combined mounts and hatches from a long gone ARTF and decided to use these after covering them the same colour as the rest of the airframe - a quick and simple solution. Construction of the wings is straightforward, beginning by cutting the lower trailing edge, including the aileron, from the sheet supplied and pinning it to the board. The lower rear spar is pinned down, then the main 6 mm × 24 mm is packed up to allow for the shape of the wing section. This is a large spar but it serves two purposes. It gives the wing strength and obviates the need for spar webs. Fitting them is a job I do not like doing! Now it is simply a case of adding the wing ribs. The instructions tell you to angle the root rib AWAY from the tip. Now that is unusual so I checked with DB and, yes, it is correct. It helps set the dihedral when the struts are added later. If in doubt, ask! There is a dihedral gauge supplied with the kit, just make sure you use it from inside the root rib.
