Novice E came about following a request from Jon Parker for a club project. It was to take the form of a 'mass build' model that needed to be simple and cheap to assemble for first time builders, easy to fly for teaching purposes, yet lively enough to be 'interesting' to fly. And, eventually, it was to form the basis for a 'one model' Fly For Fun day later in the year. Whilst considering the problems, memories of similar requirements some forty years ago began to emerge. The answers were still the same. The project rapidly morphed into a truncated version of the old Cotswold Kits Novice - my first kit. Billed as 'The Plane With NO VICES' it went on to become, numerically, my second most successful kit, selling over four thousand. Even today, Colin Buckle is still producing the Mk 1 version. I have seen many variations on it including .19 size glow motors (the original used a 1.5 cc diesel), ailerons (the new version has the holes in the ribs ready for this), flaps and undercarriages. There has even been a twice full size version.
