Milestone event for the BAA

Quarry operators on their own could not hope to influence, let alone keep up with, ever-changing legislation, therefore it makes sense for independent quarry companies to have the same level of political leverage as the major players, says British Aggregates Association director Robert Durward. Although it was the looming threat of the aggregates levy which provided the initial momentum for the formation of the BAA in 1999, the Association quickly focused on other key areas of concern. The BAA now spends much of its time ensuring that EU regulators, planners, environmentalists and politicians alike are made aware of the adverse effects of ill-considered regulations on one of the UK's few remaining primary industries. To ensure that this is done in a professional and competent manner, the Association combines the skills of its staff with the experience of its members.
