For the second year running, Midland Quarry Products have secured Bronze accreditation under the FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme), which aims to improve fleet operating standards throughout the UK by promoting good working practices and operational standards. Miller Argent have submitted plans for the extraction of some 6 million tonnes of coal from 478ha of land at Nant Llesg, west of Rhymney. Over a 14-year period, the surface mine would provide up to 239 full-time jobs and the company would invest £12.9 million annually in the site. Archaeologists have unearthed an Iron Age enclosure at Lightwater Quarries' Potgate Quarry, near Ripon. Artefacts suggest the encampment, which was discovered on land at the edge of the quarry, was home to several families from as early as 130BC.
