Overburden stripping has begun on a 90ha extension to Bardon Quarry, in Leicestershire. Aggregate Industries, who have permission to extract a further 142 million tonnes of granite from the site, say the extension will extend the life of the quarry by about 40 years. Plan submitted Aggregate Industries have applied to Devon County Council for permission to extract sand and gravel from a 100-acre site on the edge of Ottery St Mary over a five-year period. The as-dug material would be transported some eight miles by road for processing at Woodbury Common.
