HS2 Ltd have recently opened a new railhead, the second to be built near the village of Calvert, helping the high-speed rail project to continue to deliver aggregate by rail to its biggest site in Buckinghamshire, without putting extra lorries on local roads. Paul Marshall, HS2 Ltd's senior project manager, said: 'We're making strong progress at Calvert and the opening of the new railhead means that we can continue to deliver huge amounts of materials by rail - taking trucks off local roads and reducing disruption for the local community'. Already, more than 370 freight trains operated by DB Cargo and Hanson have arrived at the first Calvert railhead, which means that by the end of the year more than 840,000 tonnes of aggregate will have been delivered by rail, taking the equivalent of 84,000 trucks off the roads and saving 29,000 tonnes of carbon. Across the whole project, 15,000 freight trains will be used to haul 10 million tonnes of aggregate to HS2 construction sites - taking the equivalent of 1.5 million HGVs off the UK's roads.
