Picking a Microphone for that New Station

Most radio transceivers, except the most expensive, seem to come with a perfectly usable microphone. See Figure 1 for an example. The supplied mic is usually a handheld device including push-to-talk (PTT) functionality. A look at the station photos in QST or elsewhere reveals that almost none of the stations, except for some mobile operators, seem to use these mics -but rather select an aftermarket product.
