This is the fourth edition of what has become a hefty (6 pounds!) encyclopedia of shortwave receivers and less of a general reference book. In addition to updating the listings from his 1998 third edition, Osterman has upped the manufacturer count considerably. Many models listed will be eminently familiar to most radio amateurs - and especially to those who either got started in ham radio as SWLs or are of sufficient vintage. One distinguishing feature of this latest edition is that it includes radio manufacturers that many of us here in the US may never have heard of. Osterman's fourth edition continues to provide a resource for anyone looking to buy a used receiver, but it also, as he says, "increases coverage of non-American receivers to be more relevant to worldwide readers." And, as he states in the somewhat dated introduction, "This book includes professional monitoring radios from both sides of the Iron Curtain." (Do people still say that?) As he points out, "radio monitoring was supremely important during the Cold War, but radio broadcasting was even more crucial."
