Tighter supply and steady export demand push up some recovered paper prices in Germany

Winter has also left its mark on the recovered paper market. Merchants report a decline in municipal collection volumes of 15 to 30%. Exports are still going well and prices are almost back on January levels after a brief price drop. Although Chinese paper mills recently did not place any orders because of the Chinese New Year, shipments of previously signed contracts were delivered regularly as a result of which exports are still withdrawing volumes from the German market. The export market is not least supported by a slightly weaker euro. Added to that, the US industry reportedly has limited export capacity at the moment which strengthens export demand in Europe. At the end of the second week in February, export prices for supermarket paper and board were quoted at €100-118/t f.a.s. Mixed paper fetched €90-105/t f.a.s.
