Workers at the Smurfit Kappa Group corrugated packaging plant in Northampton have started industrial action as of 24 March. The strikers are protesting against the dismissal of a union representative. In reply to an enquiry, EUWID was told that the strike covers a ban on overtime and work-to-rule and is to run for a month to start with. The union is not ruling out further action. Investment group Corpacq has completed the acquisition of Northern Packaging in a multi-million pound deal. Northern Packaging is a supplier of corrugated packaging for customers in a range of sectors, including food and drink, retail and healthcare. The company with two sites in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire employs 80 staff and turns over £12m a year (€17m). It was previously owned by managing director Phil Bunting and members of his family. Mr Bunting remains as Managing Director following Corpacq's takeover. The deal takes the number of businesses in CorpAcq's portfolio to 11, and marks its expansion into the packaging sector.
