Alliance 4evergreen aims to boost recycling rate for fibre-based packaging by 2030

The alliance 4evergreen, which aims "at boosting the contribution of fibre-based packaging to the circular economy across the value chain," was founded by the European paper industry association Cepi one year ago. It now has 55 members, including paper, board and packaging producers, raw material suppliers, brand owners, retailers, technology suppliers and sorting and secondary raw material operations. The initiative aims to increase the recycling rate for fibre-based packaging to 90 per cent by 2030. According to the most recently available Eurostat figures, the rate was 84.6 per cent in 2017.The term "fibre-based" includes all paper and board packaging as well as moulded pulp, according to Cepi. Among the alliance's focus areas is developing "design for circularity"guidelines for fibre-based packaging. The initiative's supporters also wantto establish an"industry-wide recyclabil-ity evaluation protocol for fibre-based packaging" and to publish guidelines for improved collection and sorting of fibre-based packaging in Europe.
