Controversy on Public Works Projects

Controversial public works projects are inevitable. As stewards of public resources, we must make decisions on the public's behalf that will not please everyone. Sometimes a decision concerning a project results in a public controversy that takes on a life of its own and can threaten the project and the careers of the project managers. We cannot avoid these decisions, but we can understand what happens when a controversy erupts. This allows us to better respond to the controversy by being prepared. In fact, public controversies can become the single biggest challenge to the project.
