New Water Plant

The city of Mattoon, Illinois, was among many municipalities whose former water treatment plant had problems complying with the increasingly stringent standards of the 1986 Amendments to the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act. The greatest difficulties were in meeting the turbidity standards set by the 1989 Surface Water Treatment Rule. The plant was replaced recently with a new, technologically-advanced facility that can satisfy any foreseeable changes in the standards while operating more efficiently and at less cost.
