Imagine driving down the highway and learning― not by listening to the radio, but by reading road signs―that there's an accident 10 miles ahead that happened only seconds ago. The signs give you details about a detour, saving you time and gas, and saving public works officials the aggravation of redirecting traffic. Welcome to New York State's Hudson Valley Transportation Management Center (HVTMC), headquartered in Hawthorne, N.Y. Beginning in May, the center will initiate a new era of traffic management and cooperation among several state agencies with varying responsibilities. The center, one of only a few such facilities in the country, is designed to be a single source response system, unlike the current system, which answers to several separatejurisdictions.
