City of Casey receives state funding for landfill clean-up

The City of Casey in Melbourne's southeast has reached an agreement with the Victorian Government and other parties stemming from a 2008 methane gas incident at a landfill site. Methane gas leaked from the council-owned landfill and forced the evacuation of the adjoining Brookland Greens residential estate. The incident left council with bills of $42 million for the clean-up and $17.5 million for compensation to residents of the estate.
