A public transport system consisting of dif- ferent modes operating in a fully integrated network can be modelled analytically. Such a model can be optimised to minimise the journey time for different journey lengths. Assuming that the majority of journeys Begin and end by walking at an average Speed of 5 km/hr., then average journey Speeds could be improved by recasting the Role of the underground to operate at a ser- Vice speed of 45 km/hr., with stations an Average 4 km apart.
