Power Points

You can slice up the telecommunications power pie in a number of different ways. There is static power and there is portable power. There is DC and there is AC. There is pure chem-ical, there is photovoltaic; on the fringes there is wind power—and on the near horizon there is fuel cell technology. There are batteries and there are generators. There are combinations and permutations of the above. Either way, though, you can't use telecomms and IT systems without access to electrical power and, increasingly, what's required is a more efficient, consistent and reliable supply of that power. In one sense power in telecommunications may be the opposite of power in politics—in telecomms it's the lack of the stuff that can corrupt absolutely.
