摘要

The virtual absence of stridently pacifist imagery in World War I memorials testifies to the deep divisions and turbulent debates that marked the post-war period. Some sculptors nevertheless stood by their pacifist convictions by refusing to make memorials that extolled the virtues of war. Others found ways to avoid openly anti-war themes while at the same time satisfying their desire to rise above patriotic propaganda. The resulting memorials, though, with a few significant exceptions, proved tame. Rather than perpetuate the belligerent model or explicitly critique war and patriotic motherhood, artists like Daniel Chester French, Augustus Lukeman, Carl Paul Jennewein, and Pietro Montana found ways to express conservative pacifist ideals or transcend the brutal reality of war by focusing on spiritual themes. They relied on ambiguity to show sympathy with those who suffered war's cruelties. Strong anti-war statements in public commemorative art of the interwar period, like Bashka Paeff's Sailors' and Soldiers' Memorial in Kittery, Maine, dedicated in 1926, were the exception rather than the rule.View full textDownload full textRelated var addthis_config = { ui_cobrand: "Taylor & Francis Online", services_compact: "citeulike, netvibes, twitter, technorati, delicious, linkedin, facebook, stumbleupon, digg, google, more", pubid: "ra-4dff56cd6bb1830b" }; Add to shortlist Link Permalink http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/21502552.2012.717822
