Die heutige Gesellschaft benötigt mehr als die Erweiterung der durch das Telefonnetz geprägten Infostruktur. Multimediale Anwendungen ermöglichen über die Verwendung neuer, hochwertiger Kommunikationsformen und entsprechender Endgeräte hinaus die Erfüllung zweier gesellschaftlicher Grundbedürfnisse, nämlich die Erhöhung der Lebensqualität jedes einzelnen und die Steigerung der Produktivität im geschäftlichen Bereich. Schlagwörter in diesem Zusammenhang sind der Teleeinkauf, das interaktive Fernsehen oder auch die Telemedizin, ebenso aber die Telekooperation und die Schaffung der «Te-legemeinschaft», also die elektronische Verbindung der Menschen durch universelle Telekommunikation.%Today's society requires more than the expansion of the infostructure dominated by the telephone network. Multimedia applications facilitate the fulfillment of two of society's basic needs beyond the use of new, high-level forms of communications and the corresponding terminals - namely increased quality of life for the individual and increased productivity in the business sphere. Buzzwords in this connection are tele-shopping, interactive television and telemedicine, as well as telecooperation and the creation of the 'telecommu-nity', that is to say connecting people electronically by means of universal telecommunication.
